Silk exports slow down in 2007

The sudden soaring and diving of silk price in 2006 domestic market inhibited the needs from international market, causing enormous losses to domestic factories.

This year silk price has been gradually stabilized after experienced a substantial decline. Silk merchandise exports are expected to improve, if silk price remains stable.

However, there are some unfavorable factors for the current year, such as the continued appreciation of RMB, the export tax rebate rate reduction, which will continue to bring pressure on China's silk commodity exports.

According to China's customs statistics, from January to March, merchandise exports of Chinese silk amounted to US $1.776 billion, a drop of 5.05 percent.

Among these, silk merchandise exports marked $803 million, a plunge of 10.17 percent; chemical fiber silk products exports represented $972 million, a slump of 0.35 percent.

Exports of silk categories registered 4,793 tons, with export value of $118 million, dropped 25.31 percent and 30.04 percent, respectively, over the previous year. The average price stood at $24.61 per kg, a fall of 6.34 percent.

Silk fabric exports read 1.298 billion meters, with export value of $1.127 billion, sliding 8.22 percent and 1.68 percent, respectively, over the previous year. The average price uncovered at $0.87 per meter, an increase of 7.12 percent.

Silk manufactured product exports dropped. Silk made product exports achieved $531million, a decrease of 4.41 percent. Silk clothing exports completed 37.71 million sets, a decline 15.56 percent.

Average unit price stood at $10.98 per set, up 9.28 percent. Export amount registered $414 million, down 7.72 percent. Silk Garment exports accounted for 77.97 percent of the total exports of manufactured products.
