Country to help other nations weave bivoltine silk dream

After taking the help of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in developing superior quality bivoltine silk, India will now encourage the same in 17 countries.
This was recently announced by JICA India spokesperson Tomoyuki Fuji at a seminar. He said Indian Sericulture scientists would now help JICA set up projects for development of bivoltine silk in other countries.
Fuji said Indian experts would also join JICA officials in designing bivoltine programmes in other South Asian regions, Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries, Greece and some countries in Africa. A concord to this effect will be signed in August.
In the 16 years since 1991, JICA has helped in the production and expansion of bivoltine silk in major silk states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and Jammu and Kashmir. It is no wonder then that today, around 3,700 farmers in the country produce 1095 tons of excellent quality bivoltine silk.
The quality of bivoltine silk produced in Tamil Nadu's Erode and Gobichettipalayam regions are said to be one of the best in the world.
