Autumn cocoon purchase of Jiangsu declines

It was learned from the Silk Association of Jiangsu Province yesterday that autumn cocoon acquisition just concluded and the decline rate in product price and output were higher than expected.

Statistics show that the actual acquisition of the whole province this autumn reaches around 35000 tons, down 19.5 percent from the same period last year, only accounting for 60 percent of the theoretical yield; acquisition price is at 72 yuan per kilogram, dropped more than 45 percent from the same period last year.

According to the analysis of silk expert from the Association, the substantial reduction in autumn cocoon was chiefly caused due to serious attacks of rice pests this year. Mulberry is generally close to rice fields and spraying pesticide contaminated the leaves, resulting in autumn silkworm not cocooning, or cocooning small and lightweight, so yield and quality are not high.

Second, a number of new silkworm eggs lacked of timely and effective technical guidance in production, farmers had no enough understanding of feeding practices for new varieties. In addition, the production was also effected by high-temperature and cold wet weather during late days.

It is learned that rational silk price should be at 1,90,000-2,20,000 yuan per ton, while it rushed to 3,00,000 yuan per ton last year. Since the second half this year, price has shown a downtrend to the lowest of 1,63,000 yuan per ton.

Current price is still relatively low at about 1,70,000 yuan per ton. Silk price decides cocoon price, now downstream enterprises are taking a watching and waiting attitude psychologically.
