The department of sericulture has recently, passed on for screening, applications of 85 interested candidates of the upcoming Silk Park to the Infrastructure Leasing Financial Development Corporation.

Officials from the department confirmed that all the 85 entrepreneurs belong to Malda and are very keen on being a part of this Silk Park.

The Silk Park would run successfully, only if 40 of the 85 are short listed for the project. However, a major obstacle in the establishment of the park is the shortage of land. Currently, the authority has a total of 15 acre land which is not sufficient to accommodate a multi-storied building.

Reports show that about 44,700 farmers are engaged in sericulture producing an approximate of 12,576 MT reeling cocoon, 1,350 MT raw silk and 585 MT waste silk.

Experts from the department will be arranging for workshops to train the selected entrepreneur. The Silk Park will serve the purpose of producing finished silk products to meet the requirements of the foreign countries. Besides, it would also encompass various units ranging from reeling of silk yarn to silk goods.

Although Malda does not have its own brand image like Murshidabad silk and Bangalore silk, the district is one of the major providers of silk to various states of the country. The Park, it is believed, may help the region have its own brand name.
