The Federal Environment Protection Authority (EPA) inked a contract with Jose silk processing factory on December 19.

The contract was signed between Dr. Tewolde-berhan Gebre-egziabeher, EPA Director General and Joseph Mateka Chicco, factory owner.

The deal finalized setting up of a silk thread-manufacturing factory in Tigray State that would require an investment of over 51 million benefiting nearly 5 million households.

A total of 513,000 hectares across the country will be utilized to establish caster and mulberry plants in the period of five years.

On the one hand plants will produce silk cocoons while on the other hand it will help protect the environment and conserve the depleting resources of the country.

The upcoming unit will be the first of its kind in Africa and will aim to capture a sizable portion of the potential market.

Once in operation, this 5,000 kilogram silk thread manufacturing plant will generate employment for more than 500 people.

The country expects to secure a considerable amount of foreign currency since demand for silk in both domestic and foreign market is growing with every passing day.
