Sericulture Minister of the state of Manipur, Mr. L Jayantakumar has appealed to the people in the state to expedite development of sericulture, which could prove to be helpful to eradicate poverty in the state.

The Minister was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the Oak Tasar Krishi Mela, organized by Regional Tasar Research Station (Central Silk Board) in cooperation with the Manipur State Sericulture Co-operative Federation at Regional Tasar Research Station.

The Minister said that there is need to stir-up the people in the state, as it is financially deprived though rich in terms of human resources. Manipur can produce highest quality of silk products, but it is unable to tap its potential due to lack of knowledge among the people.

Moreover, large amount of Oak tree-cutting to produce charcoal is adversely impacting the silk production of Manipur, as it requires large scale plantation of oak trees to develop sericulture, stated the Minister.
