Decades old Spun Silk Mills at Channapatna in Ramanagara district in the state of Karnataka will be re-opened in the coming months, as proposed by the State Government.
The state-owned mills would be refurbished in the next quarter, and will commence producing sarees and ready-made garments like trousers and jubbas for both, international and local markets.
The mills were closed eight years ago, by the government, following sales of 20 acres of land and competition by China. The issue of re-opening the mills would be discussed in the next Cabinet meeting.
Around Rs 50 million will be invested to re-open the mills which will generate 4,000 jobs for youth, in and around Channapatna. Around 40 to 50 looms will be installed in the mills. The KSIC proposed to join hands with the cooperatives to promote sales and shrink product prices.
