To surmount shortage, India to import silk from China

Textiles Minister, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, recently divulged that, India is planning to import 2000 tons of superior quality silk from China for distributing the same amongst the weavers in well known silk hubs of Kanchipuram and Benares.

Maran said that the weavers in two of the centres, for some time now have been complaining of dearth of good quality silk.

Responding to the same, the government has decided to import 2000 tons of good quality silk from China, and the same will be distributed amongst the weavers there, he said.

He further divulged that, the government in order to safeguard the domestic industry, has levied anti-dumping duty on silk.
