Union textiles minister Smriti Irani said that there is an urgent need to brand Indian silk in India and abroad so that branded products can attract more overseas buyers and yield better value realization. The minister made this comment at the inauguration ceremony of the 5th India International Silk Fair, which is currently going on in Delhi.

Irani also stated that the future of Indian silk industry is very bright. She appreciated the Indian Silk Export Promotion Council (ISEPC) for organising an exhibition of silk products and providing a platform to small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that gives them exposure to overseas buyers.

ISEPC is expecting a business of over $50 million during the three-day fair. About 110 exhibitors from different parts of the country are displaying a wide range of products of silk and silk-blended items such as garments, carpets, sarees and interior decorative items of silk and silk-blend fibres at the fair.

More than hundred overseas buyers registered on the first day of the fair and a big delegation of 26 buyers has come from Japan, to source silk fabrics, accessories and garments and floor coverings, said an official statement. (KD)
