Insights

  • Sumitomo Seika Chemicals will end production and sales of polyethylene and polypropylene powder resins at its Chiba Works, Yachiyo City by March 2027 due to tough market conditions and rising costs.
  • Orders will stop in September 2025.
  • Sales will be discontinued in March 2027.
  • The move supports the company's medium-term plan to build a more resilient business structure.

Sumitomo Seika Chemicals Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Chuo-ku, Osaka, President: OGAWA Ikuzo) (“the Company”) announced today the termination of manufacture and sale of polyethylene powder resin products and polypropylene powder resin products manufactured at its Chiba Works (Yachiyo City, Chiba Prefecture) by March 2027.

The business environment for products to be discontinued has become increasingly challenging, due to sluggish market conditions, rising raw material prices, and other factors. Although the Company has undertaken various initiatives, including productivity improvements and price revisions, it has determined that it will be difficult to secure the revenue necessary to maintain the business in the medium to long term.

The product will cease accepting orders in September 2025, and sales are scheduled to be discontinued in March 2027.

Through these efforts, the Sumitomo Seika Group will promote the initiative of “Building Resilient Business Structure,” which is one of the priority initiatives set out in the mediumterm business plan.
