Out of the country’s total generated electricity of 489 billion kWh this year (500.5 billion kWh last year), 284 billion kWh came from renewable sources, up from 269.9 billion kWh in 2023.
The share of renewable power in the country’s energy mix increased by 2 percentage points compared to the 2023 figure, according to preliminary calculations by the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW) and the Solar and Hydrogen Research Centre Baden-Wuerttemberg (ZSW).
The improvement was mainly due to photovoltaics. The annual solar power generation rose to 72 billion kWh from 59.8 billion kWh last year, reaching a new peak.
The output of onshore wind facilities decreased to 115 billion kWh this year from 118.1 billion kWh last year due to unfavourable weather conditions in the fourth quarter this year. Still, onshore wind power remained the strongest energy source in the electricity mix.
Offshore wind power rose to nearly 27 billion kWh from 24 billion kWh last year. Hydropower also grew, increasing to nearly 21 billion kWh from 18.8 billion kWh last year due to above-average rainfall. At just over 49 billion kWh, biomass power production was almost stable.
“It is encouraging that renewables now cover more than half of electricity consumption almost consistently,” BDEW chair Kerstin Andreae noted in the statement.
