The textiles-apparel-fashion industry has been grappling with sustainability for a while. Everyone knows what sustainability means and what a sustainable future ought to mean. But few agree on what path to take. What makes the discourse on sustainability extremely contentious, and perhaps even nebulous, is that the means to a sustainable world is not yet "settled science".
In spite of the furious disagreements, what most agree upon is that one of the best possible ways to be sustainable is to transform the existing system into a circular economy. And given the post-corona pandemic scenario, the need for that transformation increases multi-fold.
"These are early days yet, but these are also the times of ideas. What happens in the days ahead will depend on how these ideas coalesce, if at all, or how one holds sway over another. Sustainable fashion is 'going circular'. Circular fashion is based on the fundamental principles of circular economy and sustainable development, and concerns the entire lifecycle of a fashion product-from design and sourcing, to production, transportation, storage, marketing and sale, as well as the user phase and the product’s end of life.
