A new programme to develop the required technologies to recycle blended textiles into new yarns and fabrics has been initiated through a partnership between the non-profit H&M Foundation and the Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA). The technology will be licensed widely to ensure broad market access and maximum impact.
According to HKRITA, as yet no commercially viable separation, sorting, and recycling technologies are available for many of the most popular materials like cotton and polyester blends, although, it is currently possible to recycle single fibre fabrics.A new programme to develop the required technologies to recycle blended textiles into new yarns and fabrics has been initiated through a partnership between the non-profit H&M Foundation and the Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA). “And so, used apparel of blended or unknown materials are either discarded in landfills, or are downcycled into insulation, carpeting, and other low value applications,” the research institute said.
“However, there is a major demand for these blends in the market, which offer improved fit, style, comfort and longevity,” it added.
H&M Foundation has contributed €5.8 million, while HKRITA will conduct the research and work to commercialise the outcomes. (AR)
