India’s National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered the central and Rajasthan state pollution control boards to initiate joint tri-monthly surveys in Balotra town and the adjoining textile industrial area to control pollution. The order follows a complaint against the textile industry in Balotra that is polluting the environment, including the Luni river.

The tribunal has also ordered the Balotra Water Pollution Control and Research Foundation Trust and the Jasol treatment plant to deposit Rs 1 crore and Rs 50 lakh respectively with the Rajasthan Pollution Control Board for all past breaches resulting in water pollution, according to Indian media reports.

Following a petition, the NGT had banned the industries from releasing polluted and treated water from the common effluent treatment plants (CEPT) into the Luni river.

Singh said that on October 3 a wall of HRTS site had collapsed and polluted water was released into Luni, which destroyed standing crops. (DS)
