ACTR aims to enlighten the industry on the potential of textile chemical recycling in addressing various challenges and opportunities. The initiative intends to demonstrate how this form of recycling can offer viable solutions for diverting textile waste away from landfills. Moreover, it seeks to enable a more sustainable route of textile-to-textile recycling as an alternative to incineration or landfill disposal, Accelerating Circularity said in a press release.
ACTR also focuses on the provision of sustainably sourced, circular materials that can help brands, retailers, and producers meet their CO2 reduction targets. Additionally, the organisation aims to provide long-term price stability and a consistent supply of raw materials, offering an advantage over relying on virgin resources.
“We formed this collective to move chemical recycling technology forward, share common definitions, and address policies in a collaborative way to maximise the elimination of textile waste to landfills and incineration. Chemical recycling technology has many benefits, including quality more similar to virgin fibre and the ability to recycle multiple times,” said Karla Magruder, founder and president of Accelerating Circularity.
Members of the Alliance include founding members Eastman, Lenzing, and The LYCRA Company, as well as key innovators Circ, Sappi, Renewcell, Infinited Fiber, Worn Again Technologies, Gr3n, CuRe Technology, and OnceMore from Sodra. As a first step, the ACTR is introducing a dictionary of common terms developed to educate the industry on the chemical recycling of textiles.
