During his visit to AgResearch in Lincoln, Steve Maharey, rummaged through the innovative wool fabrics developed by Crown Research Institute (CRI).

The new products include 'Smart singlet', which is knitted from fibres that can transmit an alarm signal (from an electrical circuit in the garment) if the wearer is shot or incapacitated. This can prove to be extremely useful for ballistic experts. Researchers are also exploring possibilities of how this could be used by the Navy.

Another innovation is the 'Stab and flame proof vest, a wool vest that cannot be punctured by a sharp object and is flame proof.

'Woollen Business Shirt' made from a new lightweight, pure wool fabric that's machine washable and shrink resistant without the use of any chemical shrink-resist treatments. After its success in China, Korea, Japan and Mexico, attempts are now being made to introduce this technology to India.

"These new fabrics are the result of groundbreaking advances in research at the CRI, and the first two projects include investment by the Labour-led government to create world-leading new technology." Steve Maharey beamed here.

He further praised the New Zealand for supporting such research projects and the rapid growth of technology so as to uplift country and bring it on par with global giants.
