High prices in Asia led to a decline in liquid caustic soda exports from China, which fell 3.9 percent on a month-on-month basis to 96,879 tons in August 2012, according to the Customs data.

Chinese caustic soda exports to Australia, its largest importer, dipped 38.4 percent month-on-month to 38,254 tons during the month under review.

Last month, the average price of caustic soda in the US spot market was US$ 403.75/ton, FOB US Gulf Coast. In comparison, the average price in Asia stood at US$ 473.50/ton, FOB Northeast Asia.

As a result, Australian importers preferred to buy from the US market, rather than from China.
