Power and automation technologies leader The ABB Group announced that it has been selected by Titan Petchem (M) Sdn Bhd to provide technology for its new olefins conversion and butadiene units at its Pasir Gudang Complex in Malaysia.
One unit will employ the Olefins Conversion Technology (OCT), licensed by ABB Lummus Global, to convert ethylene and butenes to propylene. Propylene capacity at the site will increase by approximately 135,000 tons per year (TPA). The other unit will include BASF's butadiene technology, also licensed by ABB Lummus Global, for production of approximately 100,000 TPA of butadiene.
ABB Lummus Global will provide basic engineering and technology licenses. The plants are expected to come on-stream in 2007 during a period of sharply increasing demand for both propylene and butadiene in the region. This will be the first plant installation in Malaysia to produce propylene using the OCT technology.
OCT is based upon the principle of metathesis to catalytically produce propylene via the reaction of C4s and ethylene. Strong growth in propylene demand has generated significant interest in this low investment, low energy route. In 2004 new units were commissioned in Japan and the U.S. Eight additional projects are currently in varying stages of engineering and construction.
Leading engineering company ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 103,000 people.
Malaysian company Titan Petchem produces olefins and polyolefins. It is also produce Malaysia's most comprehensive portfolio of Polyethylene (PE) and Polypropylene (PP).
