Japan-based PT Asahimas Chemicals is planning to invest US$ 300-400 million for expansion of caustic soda and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) production capacity at its Indonesian plant, director of the company Eddy Sutanto has said.

The capacity expansion would be undertaken through expansion of the company’s West Java’s Cilegon-based plant, ANTARA News quoted Mr. Sutanto as saying.

Post-expansion, the plant’s caustic soda production capacity will increase from the present 500,000 tons to 700,000 tons. Caustic soda is used as a raw material in textiles industry.

However, Mr. Sutanto added that the proposed capacity expansion plan is subject to approval of shareholders.

Presently, the company exports around 20 percent of its overall production, while 80 percent is consumed domestically. The plan is aimed at improving the company’s ability to cater to the overseas markets.

According to Mr. Sutanto, the plan is likely to kick-off by end of the current year, and it will take around two to two and a half years for completion, following which the plant would commence production by 2015 end or start of 2016.
