Demand for paraxylene (PX) in the country is much higher than what is available through domestic production as well as imports.
In 2005, domestic consumption in China touched 8.45 M tons mark, while the domestic production and imports could fulfill only 28 percent of this quantity.
This demand and supply situation in the country serves as a perfect example of its progress and potential.
China has become the largest exporter of textile products in the world and is expected to expand much further.
The extra-ordinary growth of polyester industry is one of the major reasons of insufficient supply of P-xylene.
Imports of purified terephthalic acid (PTA), one of the main downstream products from p-xylene, totaled to over 6.491 M tons last year.
Domestic production capacity of PX is likely to soar by more than 4.1 M tons, by 2008.
However, experts believe that to meet the rising demand of China, imports also need to go up, atleast 2.5 M tons by 2010.
