After suffering a setback for nearly nine months, the caprolactam unit of Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT) company at Kochi has reinforced its operations from April with nearly 95 percent capacity rates.

According to industrial sources, poor economic conditions combined with rising costs of raw materials like sulfur and rock phosphate, had slowed down the production capacity of this unit, which was initially capable of producing 50,000 metric tons every year.

However, presently, the manufacturing unit of FACT is receiving substantial margins from the production of ammonium sulfate, a byproduct of caprolactam. The company has expressed its desire to meet domestic demands before exporting the material to other countries.

The only other caprolactam producer in the country is Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals who has two plants in the city of Baroda with a combined capacity of 120,000 metric tons annually.
