Recently, a company in Jiangsu exported more than 8,000 pieces of clothing to the EU, but the exports were rejected due to APEO content in printed knitted fabrics exceeded the maximum requirement standard.

Wenzhou Import and Export Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, has again pressed the issue and urged the related clothing enterprises to strictly check the APEO content in export products, especially for the European countries.

APEO, short for compound alkylphenols polyoxyethylene ethers, is a key component of auxiliaries like emulsifier, penetrating agent, detergent and others, which are widely used in textile printing, dyeing, processing and plastics industries.

Since APEO has greater biologic toxicity, poor biodegradation and degradation metabolite toxicity, the EU, the US and other developed countries in recent years have drafted legislation with relevant provisions on APEO limitation in products

It has been noted that chief clothing enterprises in Wenzhou city have little knowledge about APEO, and therefore, have not yet formulated corresponding measures against its content in the products.

Bureau has stressed that clothing enterprises must clearly understand the specific APEO requirements from the importer, or insert specific APEO provisions in contracts, in order to avoid unnecessary economic losses arising from unqualified products.
