Leverkusen based LANXESS Deutschland GmbH's Fine Chemicals Business Unit received award for innovative process.

Dr. Axel Pleschke of the Fine Chemicals Business Unit of LANXESS Deutschland GmbH took second place in this year's CPhI Innovation Award with his paper entitled "Fluorination of chiral compounds at technical scale".

The papers were presented on November 1 at the Conference on Pharmaceutical Ingredients. The jury, composed of representatives of well-known companies involved in the field of fine chemicals, evaluated the papers in terms of their innovative content and the success of the method described.

Pleschke reported on the work being done in the fluorination of chiral hydroxy compounds for intermediates and active ingredients for the pharmaceutical industry.

He explained that the basis of the presentation was a scientifically known method of fluorination, which their team varied to make it usable on an industrial scale for the first time. As a result, they have already been able to fulfill an important order for a customer in the pharmaceutical industry. The team was made up of members of Marketing, Production and Process Development.

Axel Pleschke was born on February 18, 1971 in Sulzburg in southern Germany and studied chemistry at the University of Freiburg. After obtaining his doctorate in the field of organic chemistry under Prof. Prinzbach, he joined the then Central Research Division of Bayer AG in March 2000.When the company's chemical activities were carved out as part of the restructuring of the Bayer Group in 2004, Pleschke was transferred to the Fine Chemicals Business Unit of LANXESS Deutschland GmbH in Leverkusen.
