Super natural beings – angels, zombies, vampires, and werewolves – are dominating contemporary media. With movies like Twilight and shows such as the recent premiere of MTV's Teen Wolf, these immortal beings are serving as inspirations for designers such as Washington Roberts. Roberts' collection, showcasing July 15th, 2011 at Africa Fashion Week New York was stirred by the movie, Underworld.
“I wanted to play with idea of how Washington Roberts' woman would dress if she were a Vampire.” – Roberts
The collection is sophisticated and elegant with a hint of modernization. It will feature darker colours such as teals, maroons, and olive greens, contrary to Roberts' colourful signature.
Although fashion was always a big part of Roberts' life, it was never in his career agenda. Today, Roberts' designs have been featured in numerous New York fashion shows, several issues of Hype Hair Magazine and on Envision Style & Substance during NYC Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
While studying chemical engineering at Igbobi College Yaba in Nigeria, Roberts decided to start designing clothes as a hobby. When Roberts' debuted his first piece, which was a blazer for himself, it was a hit. Soon after, Roberts' enrolled in Katherine Gibbs School for Fashion, where he studied Fashion Design and Merchandising.
AFWNY is produced by Adirée and include runway shows hosting 21+ designers from various countries in Africa and those of the African Diaspora, exhibitions, and industry networking events. Some of the featured designers include Saint Wobil, AAMAA Couture and Bill Witherspoon.
