Kaleidoscopic presentation of Indian handicrafts at Expo

Some lesser known art and craft forms from across the country can be witnessed at the Handicrafts Expo being held at Malleswaram, till January 19.
The Handicraft Expo is a means for bringing the artisans and the art and craft lovers together on the same platform, which has been organised by the Development Commissioner Handicrafts, Union Ministry of Textiles, in association with Kerala Artisans Development Corporation Ltd.
Artisans and craftpersons have come from Uttaranchal, Bihar and the North-East, displaying crafts that are not generally seen in Bangalore.
Life-like animals such as horses and giraffes crafted from leather are a speciality of Madhya Pradesh.
The Madhubani technique involves an entire silk saree using fabric paint, which takes around 15 days to finish. No two Madhubani art pieces are similar.
A rare variety of craft made of fruits of pine, dried and arranged to create eyecatching decorations is displayed by Uttaranchal state.
Silk cocoon craft is used in creating greeting cards and wall hangings and other miniature craft items.
The bamboo craft of Kodagu district creates mugs, clothes hanger and flower vases.
The other varieties include Dhokra castings, stone carvings, palm leaf engraving and applique work from Orissa.
Carpets, dhurries, Mithila paintings, tribal jewellery, lac craft are from Bihar.
Woollen carpets, kantha work of West Bengal.
Cane, bamboo and terracotta craft of North Eastern states.
