Fashion designers from Southeast Asian country of Indonesia presented vivid collections made from eco-friendly fabrics, including the traditional batik, at two shows held in New York.

The fashion shows were held on the sidelines of Indonesia Investment Day, and were attended by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, along with other dignitaries.

The first fashion show of the esteemed event saw a range of captivating green and handmade ‘Kebayas’, the traditional costumes of Indonesian women, transformed into modern dresses, created by the noted fashion designer Tuty Cholid.

In her creations, Tuty used eco-friendly fabrics like mulberry silk, with accompanying accessories from Lenan Pearl of Silk, Kawanida Batik and Tuty Cholid Weaving and Batik. The collection had a dash of magnificent golden colours.

Tuty has the distinction of showcasing her eco-friendly clothing lines at various fashion shows of France, Britain, Russia, Thailand and Japan. She is also working towards the empowerment of small and medium-sized textile enterprises, supported by Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI).

The second show was presented by the Jakarta-based designer Denny Wirawan. His environment-friendly handmade collection titled ‘Swarnadwipa’, meaning the ‘Island of Gold’ in English, featured traditional women’s fabrics of south Sumatra by Nirmala Sari Songket.

The collection included a wide variety of exclusive mix-and-match daywear, sophisticated cocktail dresses and elegant evening wear outfits. The designer used various natural dyes, made from various Indonesian indigenous leaves, flowers and seeds.

Denny, known for his eco-friendly creations, has also participated in several international fashion events in Australia, China, Dubai, India, Italy, US, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Paris.

The two fashion shows were sponsored by the state-owned leading financial services organisation BNI, which has been trying to promote Indonesia’s legacy of batik to the outside world by supporting the batik makers through its partnership program with the designers.
