Following the footsteps of major international brands like Topshop and Zara, who have opened outlets in the fast emerging market of Africa, some European fashion designers are now penetrating the continent’s fashion industry.

The latest example could be seen at the ongoing event African Fashion International, also known as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Africa, where two Spanish designers – Ines Cuatrecasas Barcelo and Marc Oliver – presented the new edition of their apparel line Mille Collines, meaning ‘a thousand hills’ in English.

The designers, who launched their clothing label in Rwanda about three years ago, showcased for the first time at the increasingly becoming popular fashion event. The latest edition of their line highlighted African tinged western-shaped cuts on a range of cotton and polyester apparels topped with hand embroidered African motifs.

Fred Sathal, another European designer of French origin, featured a scintillating collection titled Constellation. The range was heavy on intricately detailed star-spangled dresses, jackets and tops seasoned with sequins, beads, thread patterns and rhinestones.

UK-based and Democratic Republic of Congo-born fashion designer Tina Lobondi presented a colourful collection. The vivid ensembles of the range were made of high quality leather and different kind of fabrics featuring an overwhelming abundance of African prints.

Started around five years ago, the African Fashion International serves as a platform for bringing in designers from the entire continent to the forefront. The event offers direct access to the designers to domestic and international markets. Going on at Johannesburg, South Africa, the event would run till October 28, 2012.
