Gong Jia Qi, a fashion design student from China, has been selected as the best designer at ‘The EcoChic Design Award China 2012’.

The emerging fashion designer, who is a student at Shanghai’s Raffles Institute, said that sustainable fashion is something more than just the expression of beauty or satisfying consumer demand.

According to her, sustainable fashion transforms design into a strategy that can help solve environmental problems.

As the winner of ‘EcoChic Design Award’, Gong Jia Qi will now design a sustainable collection for Espirit in 20 different styles, which would be launched as Espirit Fall Winter Collection 2013. The collection would be made using innovative recycled textiles, created by recycling the company’s own textile manufacturing waste.

Other winners of the show are Chen Qin Zi for the People’s Award China 2012 and Yang Qi Ying as the most promising student.

The EcoChic Design Award is a competition aimed at inspiring Asia’s emerging designers to create mass-market clothing with minimal textile waste.

The event was organized by Redress limited, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), which aims at promoting environmental sustainability in Asia’s fashion industry by reducing textile waste, pollution, and by decreasing water and energy consumption.
