Fashion’s inquisitive eyes were firmly focused on the Sultanate of Oman last night, as Muscat Fashion Week, 2013, kicked off in spectacular style. A full capacity crowd of VIP guests confirmed the three-day fashion extravaganza as a key event within Muscat’s growing arts and heritage scene, and a strong contender as the most cultural – and credible – Fashion Week in the Middle East.

Now in its third year, the annual Muscat Fashion Week has attracted a host of the region’s most talented designers – not only well-established names, but also promising faces of the future. “This is the beauty of Muscat Fashion Week,” says HE Sultan Bin Hamdoon Al Harthi. “There are some incredible undiscovered talents out there who need to be noticed, and we are extremely proud to offer a platform for the next generation of Arab designers.”

Showcasing a truly diverse mix of Middle Eastern fashion, this year sees representation from the UAE, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Morocco and of course, Oman. After a sophisticated welcome reception, royalty, VIPs, fashion buyers and the fashion media, took their seats within the expansive gardens of Riyam Park to view the latest collections from opening night exhibitors Nawal Al Hooti, Das Collection, Tatyana Aceeva and Zhor Raîs.

Flying the flag for Oman, Muscat Fashion Week veteran, Nawal Al Hooti, wowed guests as muted grey, deep blue and amber tones were adorned by traditional Omani beading and embroidery. Emirati design duo Reem and Hind Beljafla followed suit with an equally impressive collection of sleek, theatrical shapes in luxurious gold and neutral shades with a pop of bright colours and a multicultural influence.

Glamorous gowns were in abundance when evening wear designer Tatyana Aceeva’s red carpet worthy collection hit the runway. Blush colored lace dresses flowed beautifully as striking teals and ruby reds broke up the softer hues. Finally, Moroccan designer, Zhor Raîs, celebrated the true spirit of Arabia as long silhouettes in soft creams, olive greens and a dash of yellow, emblazoned with intricate embroidery and cummerbund belts, brought the day to its glamorous end.

Thanks to a private daytime exhibition at the prestigious Opera Galleria that runs until Friday Muscat Fashion Week guests will have the chance to view the collections once again and also meet the designers in person. After the opening night success of this exciting three-day spectacular, anticipation has piqued as guests look forward to witnessing the next two-days of fashion revelations.
