The high on glamour and glitterati Paris Menswear Fashion Week opened with a line of eclectic collections by a bevy of prolific designers from all over the world.

Tokyo-based designer of French origin Julien David opened the five-day-long fashion extravaganza with his latest Fall-Winter 2013-2014 collection. The 34-year-old designer’s elegant meets casual, streetwear-inspired line featured cropped flannel trousers paired with unstructured three-quarter-length coats, wool jersey leggings, reversible bomber jackets and colourful check shirts.

Italian fashion label Valentino, under its creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, presented a British styled collection with plenty of checks and hound's tooth thrown in. The range showcased single-breasted suits, traditional raincoats with leather bands, black panelled mid-thigh overcoats and sensual suit jackets.

French label Thierry Mugler, under the guidance of its creative directors Nicola Formichetti and Romain Kremer, offered a uniform-influenced collection. The line, tempered with dollops of aeronautical and military hints, included slim-fitting suits and body armour-style tops.

The 45-year-old Belgian designer Raf Simons rounded off the first day with his own label’s creations. The designer, who also is the artistic director of Dior's womenswear collections, featured a range of turtleneck ruffled shirts, satin pants, graphic printed jumpers and white striped hats in a cheerful palette of pink, blue and yellow.
