Titled as ‘Inspiring Beauty: 50 Years of Ebony Fashion Fair’, the exhibition featuring more than 60 garments would emphasise on the significant role played by fashion behind African American empowerment and achievement, said Gary T. Johnson, president, Chicago History Museum.

Curated by Virginia Heaven, assistant professor of Fashion Studies at Columbia College Chicago, the expo, which is divided into three sections, would also offer insights on the late founder and director of the Ebony Fashion Fair, Eunice Walker Johnson, who started the event as a hospital fundraiser in 1950s and later developed it into an annual fashion fair showcasing latest trends for African-American women.

The event’s first section named Vision includes nearly 30 costumes, symbolizing power, affluence, beauty and influence, designed by the most revered names of 20th century fashion such as Pierre Cardin, Emanuel Ungaro, Courreges, Givenchy, Christian LaCroix and Paco Rabanne.

The second section Innovation is divided into two costume groupings telling the story of Johnson Publishing Company, owned by Eunice Walker Johnson’s husband John H. Johnson. The section will feature ten outfits with bold styles, dynamic shapes and innovative techniques, created by Balizza, Emilio Pucci and Angelo Marani.

The last section showcases the most elaborate, luxurious and dramatic part of the exhibition with an opulent display of 19-piece collection, designed by Valentino, Bob Mackie, Bill Blass, Karl Lagerfeld, Eric Gaskins, Alexander McQueen, Guy LaRoche, Halston and Christian Dior, reflecting glamour and showmanship.
