Priscilla Queen of the Desert's costumes now in Chicago

Priscilla Queen of the Desert, the famous touring Broadway musical show telling the uplifting story of three friends embarking on a journey of a lifetime, has arrived in Chicago with its enviable collection of some 500 dazzling costumes, befitting the wardrobe of a queen.

Running till March 30, 2013, at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University, the outrageously designed outfits, also known as Gumby dresses because of their uncanny resemblance to the children’s favourite green clay humanoid American TV character with the same name, are being stored at the musical drama’s 53-foot-long semi-trailer.

The collection includes exaggeratedly flared trousers, a frock made of brightly coloured flip-flop sandals, a black velvet suit with gigantic sleeves, a frilly pink dress, bell-bottom pants and an expansive range of headgears.

Written by Stephan Elliott and Allan Scott, the musical show is the stage adaptation of the popular Australian movie ‘The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’, which is a sweet fun-filled story of two drag queens and a transsexual.

The 1994 film’s costume designer duo Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner won an Academy Award for Best Costume Design at the 67th Academy Awards for their extraordinary costume designs in the movie.
