Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong Limited announces that “The Silk Road: Treasures from Xinjiang” Exhibition showcases over 100 cultural relics featuring the products, skills, languages, customs and religious beliefs of the traders, migrants and priests who traveled what was known as the “Western regions”.

The “Western Regions”, or Xinjiang, was once a communications hub between East and West, a melting pot where Chinese, Indian Greek ands Arabic cultures met and mixed. China's link with the region was established in the second century when the imperial court of the Han Dynasty sent Zhang Qian as an Ambassador to visit the Western Regions.

The exhibits include important archaeological findings and range from ancient corpses, textiles, minqi or funerary objects, early (11th- 5th century) painted pottery, gold plaques (of the Warring States and Han Dynasty) and jewellery, to a Han lacquer comb, Tang Dynasty paintings, wooden shuanglu and go chessboards, Sassanian coins and written materials in various languages.

The Society has organised a guided tour for the exhibition led by a docent from the Museum. For convenience, we have arranged transportation from Queen's Pier, Central to the Heritage Museum and return to Central.

Allowed time after the tour for you to look at exhibits of particular interest before the bus returns to Central. A seminar, with a simultaneous interpretation service, held at the Heritage Museum on Sunday afternoon, February 12; details may be obtained through the Museum's website.
