European Union (EU) will arrange conference on Trade during March 21 to 22, 2006. The European Union launched the first Trade SIA in 1999, in anticipation of a new World Trade Organisation (WTO) round of negotiations.
Details:
EU TRADE SIA Stocktaking Conference
Date: 21-22 March 2006
Venue: Brussels, Charlemagne Building
At that time, Trade SIA was a new concept but over the years it has developed and grown until it has become a familiar and integral part of the EU's trade policy landscape.
Since then, External Trade has been designing and implementing a methodological framework to assess the impact of trade policy on all three pillars of sustainable development, and commissioning assessments carried out by independent consultants.
These Sustainability Impact Assessments allow External Trade to assess the positive and potential negative effects of trade liberalisation.
The Commission is carrying out Trade SIAs for all major trade negotiations, whether multilateral (WTO, the Doha Development Agenda), regional (Mercosur, Economic Partnership Agreements with African, Caribbean and Pacific countries, the Gulf Cooperation Council) or bilateral (Chile).
The main purpose of the conference is:
- to appraise the work done so far on Trade SIAs
- to raise awareness of Trade SIAs
- to further develop dialogue with a view to improving the way Trade SIAs are carried out and their results fed into policy making.
