Nicki McLellan, who graduated from Iowa State in December in apparel, merchandising, and design, won the top honor at this year’s event with the first look from her collection titled, “Papillon Coquillage.” She took home a $500 prize.
The winning garment is an evening gown featuring an abstracted oceanscape that was blown up and digitally printed. McLellan constructed a racerback detail featuring sliced, deep blue geodes.bestofshow-3-of-6
“It’s a simple gown, but the judges thought it was tasteful, elegant, and flattering to the model,” said Sarah Bennett, a lecturer in apparel, merchandising, and design who’s the adviser to The Fashion Show. “They also liked the color and the mood given by the digital print.”
The Fashion Show, a student-run event in its 31st year, featured 100 student-designed garments on the runway Saturday night at C.Y. Stephens Auditorium, and another 90 fashion illustrations and garments on display.
The theme of this year’s show was “Ominous Beauty.” Events were held each day on central campus this week leading up to the big event.
