The Auckland-based New Zealand Fashion Museum has engaged into a nationwide search of 1970s garments for its forthcoming exhibition on the fashion trends of the free thinking 70s era.

With the preparation for the upcoming event going on in full swing, the exhibit’s curator and renowned fashion historian Doris de Pont has urged Southlanders to dig deep into their wardrobes for clothes belonging to the bell-bottom loving hippie period.

Scheduled to take place sometime in September 2013, the exhibition organizers are looking for clothes created by the famous labels or small designers of that time such as Fotheringay, Miss Deb, Paraphernalia, Sonny, Peppertree, Hullabaloo, Tweenies, Tigermoth, Pussyfooting, Memsahib, Elle and Liz Findlay.

Founded in 2010, the New Zealand Fashion Museum organizes pop-up exhibitions displaying clothes and fashion accessories sourced from public and private collections.

The major trends of the 1970s included fitted shirts or suits in bright colours or exaggeratedly flared trousers with nearly 24 inches wide hems.
