The theme is "TEXTILE TRADITIONS TODAY -- the Relevance of Natural Fibre Techniques and Traditions in the Modern World."

The first WEFT (World Eco-Fiber and Textile Forum) FORUM was convened in 1999 at the International Ikat Weaving Forum, held in Kuching, Sarawak, East Malaysia. WEFT 2001 featured basketry, with a Natural Dye Workshop. WEFT 2003 examined "Hand painted, Printed and Decorated Textiles".

The Objectives of the WEFT Forum are:

To promote, share and acquire knowledge on the use of natural fibers and dyes.

To conserve and encourage the use of natural, sustainable material in the creation of arts and crafts.

To network amongst producers and craftspeople through the establishment of an information database.

To develop a marketing network e.g. trade in raw materials, dye stuffs etc.

To encourage and coordinate research into the traditional use of natural fiber and dyes in textile crafts.

To promote the development of World-Eco Fiber and Textile Art.

To foster cultural exchange through exhibitions, conferences, international visits by the craftspeople for the purpose of study, lectures and workshops.

The World Eco-Fiber and Textile (WEFT) Forum 2006 will again bring together international experts to exchange the information gathered through research, work and experiences.

The three-day Forum (5th - 7th May) will be held in Kuching, Sarawak, and will include a Gala Fashion Show featuring international Designers. Over 300 weavers, artisans, scholars and collectors are expected to participate in W.E.F.T 2006.
