The world-famous touring exhibit ‘The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk’ has finally arrived to its only East Coast venue Brooklyn Museum, New York.

Scheduled to run till February 23, 2014, the event displays nearly 140 haute couture and prêt-à-porter pieces designed by Jean Paul Gaultier in his impressively successful fashion career of more than 35 years.

The multimedia contemporary installation is divided into seven thematic sections, such as Skin Deep, Punk Cancan, Urban Jungle and Metropolis, exploring the different stages of the legendary designer’s artistic developments.

The ‘Odyssey of Jean Paul Gaultier’ section amplifies the couturier’s creative universe replete with his trademark themes like sailors, mermaids and religious iconography.

The Boudoir segment reveals the designer’s fascination for lingerie by featuring the famous conical bras and corsets, made from vintage 1930s metallic fabric, for Madonna’s 1990 Blonde Ambition World Tour.

In addition to the above exhibits, the display also includes some of the iconic never-seen-before items like the Paris-based veteran’s childhood toy teddy bear Nana, who is wearing a newspaper made cone bra and a faded frayed tan coat.

Also, a mermaid-shaped gown, worn by Marion Cotillard at the 2008 Oscars, and a cancan bustier dress attached with photo-printed legs have become the part of the vast travelling exhibit, which was first organized at Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.

The Brooklyn Museum display has also dedicated a separate section to Gaultier’s famous muses. The special segment features model Crystal Renn’s famous fishnet-covered floral gown, Naomi Campbell’s beaded bronze catsuit and Beth Ditto’s floral tulle leotard.

The retrospective exhibition, paying tribute to the works of the international fashion industry’s 61-year-old enfant terrible, has been earlier organized in cities like Dallas, San Francisco, Stockholm and Madrid.
