Josephine Obin Komara, the renowned Indonesian designer known for her active involvement in batik promotions, has recently unveiled a high-tech museum, entirely dedicated to the age-old fabric.

Dubbed as Museum Kain, meaning the Cloth Museum in English, the facility, incorporated with various interactive elements, will serve as an educational medium for youngsters to learn about the textile heritage passed on to them by their ancestors.

The museum displays more than 61 pieces of rare batik designs and each of the featured exhibits includes a specially-designed wooden panel, replete with a touch-screen display giving details about the motifs and materials used.

Located in Balinese district of Kuta, the museum also features large-size monitors, installed between the room partitions, which showcase instructional videos on how to wear the traditional Indonesian cloth.

Copper batik printing blocks, canting wax pens and dried leaves used for coloring have also been displayed alongside the batik collection, which would be rotated every six months to feature the designer’s expansive personal collection of nearly 600 rare batik pieces.
