99th China Export Commodities Fair kicked off on April 15 with first phase lasting till April 20, while the second phase begins from April 25 and will run through April 30, 2006.

This fair, the biggest of its kind in the country, and more commonly known as the Canton Fair, is held twice each year in the Southern city of Guangzhou.

However, shoe makers who are trading their products at this fair are defending their prices stubborn defiance.

Sources explain that the traders consider their prices fair and refuse to reduce them just to make up for anti-dumping duties that is being imposed by the EU.

Duties on Chinese shoes at the base level started off at 4.8 percent from April 7 and is expected to rise to 19.4 percent in the next six months, according to the EU.

Leading Zhejiang based Kangnai Group and Aokang Group along with 12 other shoemakers in the province had issued a joint declaration to oppose EU sanctions on China-made footwear.

Sources also added that since the EU duties have been implemented on Chinese shoes, most European buyers are being tentative in finalizing their deals.

This year's Export Commodities Fair boasts almost 30,058 booths and has attracted 13,686 exhibitors representing an increase of 1,031 over last year.

Over 450,000 people, including 180,000 overseas buyers are expected to visit the event.

Industrial Products, Textiles & Garments, Medicines & Health Products, Consumer Goods and Gifts are all on display according to the official website information.
