Kebaya, the traditional women’s blouse-dress of Indonesia, played an important role at the just concluded edition of Indonesia Fashion Week (IFW), which conducted an Urban Kebaya Design competition.

Held on the third day of IFW, the event was organized to promote the modern day ready-to-wear Kebaya as a multi-purpose outfit that can be worn to any kind of formal or casual occasion.

Several young designers such as Faisal Usman, Michelle Maitlin, Wahyudi, Jonathan Permadi, Rizka Aditama and Nike Utami showcased their interpretations of the classic attire, decorated with rich vibrant prints and other embellishments.

Designers like Mustaghfiroh Hidayatun from Bogor, Vindy Faizah (Jakarta), Fetik Mawaria (London) and Yuki Kusnadi (Jakarta) exhibited Kebayas made from eco-friendly naturally dyed batik, woven in Lasem, a district town located in Rembang, Jawa.

More than 55 designers participated at this year’s edition of IFW, which was held under the theme of ‘Local Movement’, a program which aims to support original Indonesian products through fostering love for local fashion. The program not only encourages the production of local products but also supports SMEs, designers, entrepreneurs and related associations.
