The apparel industry in Lesotho has been successful in attracting foreign direct investment and is currently the biggest exporter under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).
The industry is, however, facing increased competition from other global players and the expiration of the 3rd country fabric provision in AGOA poses yet another challenge.
The industry has shown strong commitment to improving labor standards and these efforts can potentially create a competitive advantage. However, in order to take full advantage of this opportunity, several key issues need to be addressed. These include: regional integration, market diversification, innovation, productivity, and HIV/AIDS.
The aim of the conference on Day 1(May 16th) is to focus on these key areas and generate a debate among relevant stakeholders on how to overcome the challenges and obstacles facing the industry. At the end of the conference, a clear roadmap is expected to emerge with an emphasis on strategies and mechanisms to increase competitiveness and to help grow the industry in the short, medium & long term.
The first day of the conference will be followed by a gala dinner where a number of high profile keynote speakers will address the guests. The programme of events will also include a showcase of Lesotho's fashion industry as well as the launch of the industry's HIV and AIDS programme, ALAFA (Apparel Lesotho Alliance to Fight Aids). This dinner on May 16th, will be charged at 300 Rand per head.
On Day 2 (May 17th) a limited number of selected delegates will be involved in intensive sessions involving each of the key stakeholder groups. The objective of these sessions will be to examine in greater detail key areas of weaknesses in relationships and identify opportunities for collaboration and joint action that emerge from the first day's discussions.
The participation on the second day will be by invite - only. International delegates not participating in this session will be provided with an opportunity to undertake a field trip to view Lesotho's existing garment environment.
This will help provide a first hand experience of the industry situation in the country and some of the opportunities that exist.
