Akeppiroge Crafts exhibition in May

Artisans of Akeppiroge crafts collective will open their homes and studios for the only time this year to visitors for an exhibition event.

It is to be held from May 12 to 14, 2006, in Takashima, Shiga Prefecture on the western shore of Lake Biwa.

Crafts include a variety of ceramics, natural dyeing and textile arts, woodworking and lacquer ware, calligraphic arts, metalwork, and glass which will be displayed.

The Akeppiroge collective began in 1998 and now includes 13 members, almost all of whom are nationally-exhibited craftspersons.

Akeppiroge's annual open studio/home event, facilitate visitors to enjoy viewing both artists' homes and natural environment where crafts are created.

A visitor might be able to see locally harvested mugwort and handmade felt that will later be dyed green bubbling away in same pot.

Takashima's combination of both rugged utilitarianism and natural beauty has inspirational effects on craftwork of Akeppiroge members.
