Young up and coming Sri Lankan designers, under the emerging designers’ support platform BrightSparks, grabbed the spotlight at the just concluded third instalment of HSBC CFW Resort Show.

Designer Shayani Alwis chose to feature a nature-inspired white lace and bead decorated line, which included pieces like billowy skirts and tops with blown up sleeves, whereas new talent Udaya Wickramasinghe showed an ethically produced, architecture-influenced range, replete with wood carving-inspired motifs and three-dimensional crochet detailing, at the catwalk soiree.

Hasara Kulatunga drew inspiration from the beach shacks of Sweden and England for her pastel purple, yellow and pink based collection, which was adorned with varying washes and spray paints, while Aeka de Silva opted to present a tropical-inspired, petals and thorns themed, batik heavy line titled Pricked by an Araliya.

In addition to the young fashion labels, the four-day-long Sri Lankan event also featured designs from over 17 established national names, including Charini Suriyage who displayed her latest hand-woven Sri Lankan silk, handcrafted crochet buttons and reclaimed fabrics made line.

Apart from the home-grown names, three international heavyweights such as the Bangladeshi talent Bibi Russell, Harare label from the United States and the prolific Indian designer duo Abraham and Thakore also participated at the fashion do in Negombo, a major city located in the west coast of the Island.
