Due to increase in cotton and waste paper dispatch to Asia, particularly China and Hong Kong, contributed to an export rise and also an increase in imports in textiles, manufactured goods and chemicals, setting a new container trade record with 1.445 million containers shipped in and out of Sydney ports during 2005-06.

The increase in container traffic is a five percent rise over the last year and over the last three years, Sydney ports have had an average annual growth in container trade of 7.6 percent.

Appreciably, exports were up by eight percent giving Sydney its highest-ever export result of 345,000 containers.
