Jewelry Council Collection Awards was held at the Sandton Convention Centre recently.

The theme of this year's competition was Go for Gold.
All pieces entered by TUT students were manufactured by lecturers and had to be either nine or 18 carat gold.

A third-year Jewelry Design student, Madelyn Botha of the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) was named as the overall winner in both the student and professional category this year.

Her design of a nine-carat neckpiece made of wooden beads and yellow gold secured her the title and prize money of R10 000.

Six of the ten finalists in this year's competition hailed from TUT.

This competition was held for the first time in 1994 that aims at fostering and promoting excellence in South African jewelry design.

It also encourages young South African designers, proudly linked by their appreciation of all that is African, to draw from their heritage for inspiration.

Winning collection will be displayed at Jewellex International 2006.
