Government appeal to follow on the lines of Madrid banning thin-skinned model from catwalk has been rejected by Marks and Spencer Chief Executive Stuart Rose and the Chairman of British Fashion Council organizing London Fashion Week which starts today.
Rose was reacting to the appeal made by Culture Secretary of London, Tessa Jowell to ban the thin models following the Madrid example. Organizers in Madrid had rejected five models who were underweighted as per body mass index standards set by them.
Rose while rejecting her appeal said that body mass is just an indicator and not absolute and what was needed is to educate and provide facts to people so that they could make their own mind.
But the issue has already snowballed in a major controversy with Letizia Moratti, the Mayor of Milan, indicating that she will ask for a similar ban by Milan Fashion Week.
Fearing this Milan model agency owner, Riccardo Gay argues that such rules will forced them to reject 80 percent of models.
