It has been alleged that handloom and textile fairs currently on in different parts of the country have been organized by Jute and Textile Ministry without issuing tender notice.

This has resulted in the depriving of earnings for the ministry as private players who have allotted stalls and made all arrangement are making merry.

Akram Hossain, Chairman of Textile Board stated in the media that although board had worked out the arrangement, it did not invest in the sector. A committee comprising of seven members looked at the monetary aspect and the profit was being deposited with the committee.

Fairs were earlier on organized by the Board but subsequently, lack of interest and fund forced the Board to hand over the responsibility to private players. The fairs are approved by the Board only.

There are in all six fairs going on throughout the country and Hossain accepted that organizers had indulged in irregularities but subsequent inquiry by the board could not prove the charges against them.

Participants from fair held in Bogra informed that TK620 million had been earned at the fair. It was further alleged that in the fair, real weavers had no space and place and all was taken over by textile traders and factory owners from different parts of the country.
