Even as Montreal Fashion Week sees Quebec designers unraveling wonderful designs, fear looms large over the stiff competition the industry faces from cheap producers like China.
Executive Vice-President of the Fur Council of Canada, Alan Herscovici said that scenario has changed and today one has got to have creativity and innovation in their armory.
Quebec clothing manufacturing industry which is second behind Los Angels has been weathering the storm of cheap products from China and other countries.
Estimates reveal that employment has fallen by 149,000 and has come down to 2, 173, 000 in the manufacturing sector and the biggest loser has been clothing and textiles.
Herscovici emphasized the need to apply creativity to save the industry as they would not withstand just on average products as Asian producers can make them cheaply.
Clothing working union, Unite Now has appealed to the Government to bring in some safeguards to save local apparel industry. Union asked Government to take advantage of WTO rules and limit the imports from China to 7.5 per cent yearly up to 2008.
