Gujarat Emporium organizes handicraft exhibition

An exhibition of handicraft and hand printed textile products is going on at Jawahar Balabhavan, which displays fine works of craftsmen including traditional Gujarati drapes, Rajasthan's Chanapatna toys and Rajput art forms.

This event is an effort to enable traditional craftsmen to sell their work at affordable prices. It is organized by Gujarat Emporium, Ernakulam due to this year being 50th year of Kerala's formation.

Exhibition is open till November 19, 2006. K Arunachalam, Manager of Gujarat Emporium, said Government has given 20 percent concession on handlooms and 10 percent on handicraft. People can buy these at economical prices.

Variety of dress materials like traditional Gujarati block, bathic, Kutch, vegetable, bandini printed and brush worked cotton, silk sarees, etc. are showcased in the expo which attract attention.

Sarees, churidars, ghagra cholis and tie-and-die shawls are displayed which have price range of Rs100 to Rs2000. Kolkata's handloom cotton bedsheets are beautiful and cost Rs400.

Also displayed are bangles made from Australian diamonds with gold plating of 22 carats, lockets and chains made from semi precious Jaipuri stones, traditional Rajasthani bangles, etc. preferred by women.

Leather items like bags, purses, gloves, carpets, doormats and various wall hangings are exhibited. Terracotta products from Kolkata are being displayed for the first time. Wind chimes made from terracotta have a price of Rs200.
